Looking for a good book to read?

Looking for a good book to read? You found the right place! I love Young Adult Literature and love recommending interesting titles to my students even more. This blog will recommend titles of YA Literature that I have recently read and want others to discover as well. Enjoy! Under each post is the "Comment" option. Feel free to share your opinions about each of the books so that other students can read your opinions as well.

You might have noticed the recent makeover each of the posts got. I rearranged the posts so that the summaries are hidden. If you are curious about a book and want to know more about it, click on "Read more >>", the summaries are hidden there for more information. Have fun!

Gathering Blue

Title: Gathering Blue
Author: Lois Lowry
Genre: Fantasy

You will like this book if:
  • You like The Giver or Messenger, both books by Lois Lowry.
  • You like to read dystopian literature.
  • You wonder how the world would be different with more, less, or different laws.
  • You recognize the importance of people's differences.
  • You like to read books that make you think as you go.
  • You believe in people being given unexplainable gifts.
You will not like this book if:
  • You prefer reading books with action and/or romance.
  • You like books that are exciting.
  • You have never read and are not interested in The Giver.
Fun Fact #1: This book is meant to be a companion book to The Giver.  None of the characters are the same, but the theme of dystopian ideals is definitely repeated.  This community is very different from that in The Giver but still just as interesting to think about.

Fun Fact #2: If you like The Giver AND this book don't miss Messenger.  That books is also a companion and ties all the stories together.

Summary: Kira lives in a community where disabilities and differences are not embraced and she finds herself in unpredictable situation; Kira not only has a deformed leg but her mother has passed away unexpectantly.  The other women want her land for themselves and are justified in doing so because Kira has seeingly nothing to contribute to their community.  Until one day, through a strange turn of events, she is given the opportunity to live within the grand Council Edifice and to do important work.  She is supposed her gift of embroidery to create the scenes of the future upon a piece of cloth.  She is joined by Thomas the Carver, and another young girl, The Singer.  Not wanting to be forgotten, her friend from outside the Edifice (the rough and tumble Matty), brings her a special gift; he brings her the color blue which hasn't been replicated in her community in so long that there is no knowledge as to how to make it.  With that gift Matty also brings others: strangers, question, and ultimately freedom.
