Looking for a good book to read? You found the right place! I love Young Adult Literature and love recommending interesting titles to my students even more. This blog will recommend titles of YA Literature that I have recently read and want others to discover as well. Enjoy! Under each post is the "Comment" option. Feel free to share your opinions about each of the books so that other students can read your opinions as well.

You might have noticed the recent makeover each of the posts got. I rearranged the posts so that the summaries are hidden. If you are curious about a book and want to know more about it, click on "Read more >>", the summaries are hidden there for more information. Have fun!

Beauty Queens

Title: Beauty Queens
Author: Libba Bray
Genre: Fantasy

You will like this book if:
  • You would like to read about how people survive and thrive after a plane crash.
  • You wonder what beauty queens would actually be like if you took away their fancy clothes and makeup and have some Girl Pride! swelling inside you.
  • You are looking to read a snarkier and female version of Lord of the Flies.
  • You like to read books that are completely unpredictable because their plot is interesting AND because the events are so enjoyably far-fetched.
  • You watched Lost.
You will not like this book if:
  • You like books that you read to be realistic.
  • You want to read a book about boys.
  • You have a hard time keeping track of stories with many major characters.
Fun Fact #1:  How closely did you check out the cover?  Notice what is in place on bullets on her shoulder holster...

Summary: A group of beauty queens crash on a "deserted" island.  Doesn't that just sound fascinating?  However, instead of savagely going against each other for how different they are, these beautiful (outside but especially, inside) young women become comfortable with who they really are.

BUT WAIT...I am making this book sound much cheesier, vomit-inducing than it actually is.

While this is a book of girl power chicks figuring themselves out, it is also a book that makes its readers question the world around them.

Why do we buy the products we do?  Why do we watch reality shows or ones that demean women?  Why do we judge some people and assume we know everything about other groups?  Can women be the stronger gender?  Is your sexuality optional?

The plot seems predictable, but with consistent questions, Lost-like events happening on the island, and endless social commentary-this book is far from simple.  It is one of the most complex, thought-provoking books I have read in a while.  This book contains mature content.
