13-year-old Mai had many heartbreaks before she and her grandmother arrive at the Thai refugee camp she and her grandmother live in before they leave for America. Eventually, word comes that they may join their family and begin to look up. Mai's story is not so different from many Hmong immigrants; she struggles to decide between her own traditional Hmong values and the materialistic American pursuits. However, Mai's story is told in a heartbreakingly honest voice that readers can't help but empathize with her struggles.
