This was a student recommendation but I don't know who!  Someone mentioned it in the Guest Book (at the bottom of the page).  This book was always lingering toward the top of my Want To Read list and when I saw a student recommended it, I ordered from the library right away.  I am so glad one of you mentioned it.  I liked this book so much I read it in 2 days flat, ordered it for my classroom library, and gave it to my favorite reader (my mom) to check out.  So thank you whoever you are!  Keep those recommendations coming!

You will like this book if:

• You are worried about the social pressures (rumors, partying, etc.) that come up with students in middle school and high school.
• You like books that make you think about your own life.
• You want to read a book that you will discuss with others when you finish it.
• You like scavenger hunts or books that don't tie all details together until the end.
• You want a book that you can't put down or that you immediately want to re-read to make sure you didn't miss anything.
• You liked reading Before I Fall; there are many similar themes.

You will not like this book if:

• You prefer books that are upbeat and happy.
• You are offended by mature content in novels.
• You like books that have fantasy or action.
• You can't see your own role in the natural drama that occurs in schools.

Fun Fact #1:  I have so much to say about this book.  I want to discuss it with everyone that reads it!  My sister is a school counselor and I am going to make her read it immediately because I want to hear her input about student suicide.  I want to create a chart that traces the actions of all the characters.  I want to re-read the book to make sure I understand it more clearly.  It has been sometime since I have read a book that I have wanted to interact with so much.  It is refreshing.

13 Little Blue Envelopes

Title: 13 Little Blue Envelopes

You will like this book if:

• You like to read romance novels.
• You have ever fantasized about traveling to or around Europe.
• You are lucky enough to have a painfully cool older woman in your life that you admire despite their flaws: an aunt, a neighbor, or even an older sister.
• You like The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series.
• You want a quick read that is both easy, fluffy, and entertaining.
• You like scavenger hunts.

You will not like this book if:

• You like books with action, violence, and/or major conflicts.
• You prefer books with male main characters.
• You are looking for a book that will make you think about life or that you learn something from.

Fun Fact #1: I have to admit...I think I am partial to this book.  Having just become an auntie in the past year, I totally connected to the relationship between Ginny and her aunt Peg.  I kept finding myself hoping that I could do something so cool for my niece someday.  Maybe I should just work on not gagging as I change her diapers for now...

Fun Fact #2:  There is a second book!  The Last Blue Envelope is the sequel to this book.  I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I can't wait!!!  The premise is something that I was so curious about when I finished the first one.

Messenger

Title: Messenger
Author: Lois Lowry
Genre: Fantasy

You will like this book if:

• You liked The Giver and Gathering Blue.  These three books are meant to be companion novels to each other.
• You enjoy reading dystopian literature.
• You like to imagine a place where all people are welcome.
• You would like to trade some of your valuable things for other, new valuable things.
• You wonder if have or would like any special gifts that others don't have.

You will not like this book if:

• You like to read books that are realistic.
• You don't have patience for books with corrupt characters.
• You like stories that answer more questions rather than give you more questions to think about.

Fun Fact #1: This book is the last companion novel with The Giver and Gathering Blue.  This novel is different though.  The first two novels have completely different characters.  In Messenger, the characters in all of the books come together. 

Fun Fact #2:  I think that this book, more than the others, asks readers to look at the flaws of individuals rather than the flaws of communities or groups of people.  The antagonist is sickening and fascinating at the same time.  This novel was my favorite of the three!

Gathering Blue

Title: Gathering Blue
Author: Lois Lowry
Genre: Fantasy

You will like this book if:

• You like The Giver or Messenger, both books by Lois Lowry.
• You like to read dystopian literature.
• You wonder how the world would be different with more, less, or different laws.
• You recognize the importance of people's differences.
• You like to read books that make you think as you go.
• You believe in people being given unexplainable gifts.

You will not like this book if:

• You prefer reading books with action and/or romance.
• You like books that are exciting.
• You have never read and are not interested in The Giver.

Fun Fact #1: This book is meant to be a companion book to The Giver.  None of the characters are the same, but the theme of dystopian ideals is definitely repeated.  This community is very different from that in The Giver but still just as interesting to think about.

Fun Fact #2: If you like The Giver AND this book don't miss Messenger.  That books is also a companion and ties all the stories together.

• You get frustrated by technical words as you read, even if they are used infrequently.

Fun Fact #1:  I didn't even read this book.  I had someone whose opinion I totally trust read it for me and help me add it to the blog.  Just one reason I love my mom.

Swim the Fly

• You prefer books that make you think or help you learn something.

Fun Fact #1: Mrs. McCarthy read this book after I gave it to her on our vacation this summer.  She read it in just 2 days, had her first lol on page 11, and loved the book.  Ask her about it!

Fun Fact #2: If you like this book there is a sequel called Beat the Band.  I haven't read it yet, but I am really excited to check it out!  I hope it is as funny as the first one.

Matt and his two best friends set an annual summertime goal, and this year's might end up being their first fail.  They want to see a live naked woman.  Between trying to impress a girl, dealing with his desperate-to-date grandfather, being an all-star swimmer (when he actually sucks), and trying to see some skin, Matt's summer adventures are ridiculous, raunchy, and hilarious.  As you can imagine, there is mature content in this book.  Don't say I didn't warn you...

The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod

Title: The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod: Eighth Grade Bites
Author: Heather Brewer
Genre: Fantasy

Thank you to Jared K. and Gwen S. for this book recommendation!  Jared told me about it, Gwen wrote about it in one of her Reading Responses, and I picked it up from the library shortly afterward.  Vlad definitely lives up to the reputation Jared and Gwen set for him.  Thanks Jared and Gwen!!!

You will like this book if:

• You like to read vampire books.
• You prefer books that are mysterious.
• You enjoy when characters aren't always what they seem.
• You like a lot of action in the books you read.
• You want to read a book that is a fast, easy, and enjoyable read!

You won't like this book if:

• You like when there are a lot of girl characters in books.
• You prefer to read books that are realistic.
• You don't like to use your imagination as you read.
• You like books that are serious.

Fun Fact #1: Imagine this book as a combination between Harry Potter and Twilight, expect without the wizards and without the romance.

Fun Fact #1Right away I have to say that I don't like this kind of book.  I felt like Julia, the main character, was weak and doesn't give credit to the self-confidence that many girls have.  However, I was drawn to this book (as I think many of my students will be) because of the gritty nature of the gang world.  Also, I like to believe that my girls would be able to look at a character like Julia and see the errors in her way.  Right, ladies?

Our history classes teach us about the American Revolution, and they teach us about slavery in our coutnry.  However, how many people think about both of these major historical events together-about slavery during the American Revolution?  Chains is the story of a slave, Isabel, who was sold to a well-to-do Loyalist (supported England during the war) family in New York City.  Isabel and her sister are trying to survive and gain their freedom when a terrible tragedy makes Isabel act in ways she would never have dreamt possible.  Should she be a spy for the Americans? Or for the British?  And what will she do to ensure that she and those important to her stay alive?

One Crazy Summer

• You are interested in the Black Panters.

Delphine is in for one crazy summer, surely is.  She and her sisters, Vonetta and Fern, are traveling from New York to visit the mother that left them nearly 8 years before.  Crazy, huh?  But then, the sisters quickly realize that their mother is crazy; she isn't excited to see her daughters, won't cook for them, and refuses to use one of the girl's names.  Crazy, right?  But then...Delphine's mother, Cecile, encourages the girls to go to a day camp run by the Black Panthers in her Oakland, California neighborhood.  This is an entertaining novel that illustrates how messy family dynamics can be, sheds light on the elusive group the Black Panthers, and shows how much one young girl can learn during a crazy summer. 

Before I Fall

You will like this book if:

• You wonder how even your smallest decisions can change your life.
• You like the movie "Groundhog Day" (I know this movie is quite old, but check it out!  It's a goodie!)
• You have opinions about how popularity effects all students in schools.
• You sometimes take your life for granted.
• You regret the way you treated classmates when they were younger.
• You like reading Thirteen Reasons Why; there are a ton of similar themes.

You will not like this book if:

• You are offended by language and sexual references.
• You like short books that you can read quickly.
• You are irritated by repition.

Meet Sam Kingston: one of the most popular girls in school with friends and a boyfriend less popular girls are jealous of.  Honestly, her character isn't even all that likable, but as the book goes on readers fall for her.  I mean-how can you not like a girl that dies over and over again and has to relive the last day of her life for a week?  Sam Kingston not only has to witness her death repeatedly, but she also has to recognize her flaws, her mistakes, and her lost opportunities to do better.  This is a long book, but definitely worth the commitment.  There is mature content in this book.

Looking for Alaska

Kek has lived in two very different places: first in his homeland of warm, sunny Africa and now as a refugee in bitter cold Minnesota.  There is very little about his new life that reminds him of home: not his cousin, not his only friend (a young girl living in foster care), and definitely not school.  Kek has a lot to learn about America, and he can't wait to teach his mother.  Except, he hasn't heard from her yet and worries he might not ever again.  But there is one thing that makes him happy in his new home-Gol, the cow.  I know you are thinking that this book sounds terrible, but it is very heart-warming and I wouldn't be surprised to hear your smiled when you finished it.

The Graveyard Book

You wouldn't like this book if:

• You like to read books that are realistic.
• You are scared of the dark.
• You like books that explain mysterious events right away.

The first chapter is startling: murder and an orphan saved from abandonment by ghosts!  I promise I am not spoiling anything for eager readers because all of this occurs within the first 30 pages, literally.  This dark, mysterious novel is about Bod, short for Nobody, Owens and his life living amongst the long-dead in a graveyard.  His family and friends (all ghosts) have vowed to raise and protect Bod from a violent killer who hunted his parents and is now hunting him.  Each chapter reads like a different short story but all of the pieces come neatly together at the end. 

Hole in my Life

• You recognize that you make mistakes, but you ultimately learn from them.
• You like the Joey Pigza books.

• You disapprove of people's illegal actions.
• You are very dedicated to reading fiction books only.
• You are offended by strong language and drug references.

Have you read any of the Joey Pigza books?  Who would have ever thought that the author of those much-loved actually spent over a year in jail for his role in a major drug smuggling deal.  In his memoir, Jack Gantos, tells readers the stories about his bad decision-making, major failures, and his time in federal prison.  Readers are left inspired by his passion for writing and begin to not just enjoy his work but respect it too.  This book contains some mature content.

Anne Frank (Authorized Graphic Biography)

• You want to read stories that happen in the current time or the future.

The heroic story of Anne Frank is told as it has never been told before: as a graphic novel.  This novel doesn't discount the actual story of one of the most well-known Holocaust victims, instead it tells readers so much more.  The story starts when Otto and Edith Frank got married, follows their family through living in the Annex, Anne dying in Bergen-Belsen, and the publication of the novel and play.  This graphic novel reads like a comic book but is packed with facts and an interesting story. 

The Adoration of Jenna Fox

• You don't want to wonder as you read books.
• You have no interest in the future.

Fun Fact #1: It took a while for me to find any science fiction qualities in this book, in fact, I was beginning to be convinced that this book didn't have anything to do with science at all.  Sometimes readers shy away from science fiction because they worry that it will be over their heads (I know I do!).  However, once these details appeared in Adoration I found that they were explained well and I wasn't discouraged by the "science" in the book.  Actually, it left me with a lot to think about!

Fun Fact #2: UPDATE!!!  I just heard that a sequel to this book is being released at the end of August.  It is going to be called The Fox Inheritance and supposedly takes place 260 years after the first one ended.  Hmmmm...sounds interesting.  Stay tuned!

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

  Junior doesn't have it easy on his Spokane Indian reservation, if it isn't easy strapped-for-cash mom or his drunk dad, it's his runaway sister.  But Junior wants more and has the potential to get off the "rez" and seeks a better education at the all-white school off the reservation.  He realizes quickly that he doesn't fit in at his new school, and now he doesn't fit it at home either.  It sounds like a depressing book, but this book is hilarious (you might even laugh out loud)!  Junior's story-telling makes you laugh and his illustrations make the book easy to read and interesting to look at.

The Hunger Games series

• You are human...just kidding, but honestly, I haven't heard one negative review from any student so far.
• You like books that are action-packed.
• You like books that keep up reading at night instead of sleeping.
• You like to read about how people survival in very difficult environments.
• You like to read about characters rebelling against the government.

You wouldn't like this book if:

• You can't visualize action scenes in your head.
• You like a book to grab your interest on the first few pages (hang on until Chapter 3).

  This series of books follows a brave young woman, Katniss, as she continually answers to and rebels against the demands of the Capitol.  Each of the 12 districts are required to send 2 teenagers, one male and one female, to participate in their annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death where only one victor survives.  Without giving away anything about the two following books, I will say this: things only get more complicated in the subsequent books.  Here's a little secret though:  my favorite book of the 3 is Catching Fire.

Cassie and Lia have always been best friends until their secret drove them apart.  Despite their arguments, Cassie calls Lia 33 times the night she commits suicide; Lia never answered.  Their secret pact, to always be skinnier than the other person, drives both of them into a spiral of scarily unhealthy eating disorders.  Lia has to learn to deal with her own ghosts and the text of the novel, containing words and phrases that are crossed out, italicized, and even shrunk, gives a visual of the clouds of winter Lia endures every day.
